Easy Homemade Applesauce to Make With Your Kids

Apple season is here, and one of the best things to do with them is make applesauce. With just one pot, five ingredients, and about twenty minutes, you'll have a homemade version that is so much better than anything from the store.

It's also a great recipe to make with kids. They can add everything to the pot, stir, and - most fun of all - mash it at the end. And unlike many store-bought versions, there's no refined sugar: just apples, a little maple syrup, and cinnamon.

Homemade Maple Cinnamon Applesauce

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds apples (about 6 medium), any variety or a mix (such as McIntosh, Cortland, Gala, or Honeycrisp); peeled, cored and chopped

  • ¼ cup water

  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup, plus more to taste

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

  • kosher salt

Directions:

  1. Add the apples, water, maple syrup, cinnamon, and a tiny pinch of salt to a medium pot and stir to combine. Cover and bring to a simmer over medium heat, then continue simmering, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and falling apart, about 15 to 20 minutes.

  2. Remove the pot from the heat. For chunky applesauce, break it up with a potato masher to your desired consistency. For smooth applesauce, blend it in a food processor.

  3. Stir in the lemon juice and taste (depending on how sweet your apples are, you may want another drizzle of maple syrup.)
