The Easiest Time to Build Better Habits is Right Now — Here’s Why

Back-to-school season is here – and even if you’re not the one carrying the backpack, the shift in schedule, routine and season is a natural invitation to start fresh.

Psychologists call this the Fresh Start Effect – the idea that certain moments in time, like the start of a new year, a birthday, or the first day of school, help us mentally separate from our “past self” and feel more motivated to pursue new goals. Research shows that we’re more likely to take action during these moments because they mark a clean slate. They allow us to step back from the day-to-day, let go of our past, and refocus on the big picture.

If you’ve been meaning to make a change, whether it’s committing to regular workouts, creating tech-free dinners, or aiming for seven hours of sleep – this is the perfect time to start.

And it doesn't have to be big to be powerful. Even small shifts – taking the stairs instead of the elevator, stepping outside for fresh air between meetings, or replacing one afternoon snack with fruit – can signal to your brain that something new is beginning.

And while big milestones are helpful signals, you also don’t have to wait for them – you can create fresh starts for yourself by setting intentional turning points, even on an ordinary morning.

Here’s to your fresh start this season – may it bring you more balance, energy and time for what matters most.

(And if part of your plan is enjoying regular healthy family dinners, Easyfeast is always here to help with that!)
